Productive Use of Renewable Energy Portal

The Productive Use of Renewable Energy (PURE) Portal was created to allow individuals and organisations engaged and interested in PURE to gain and share knowledge. The potential contribution of PURE to poverty alleviation and renewable energy mainstreaming makes it an area of great importance for all engaged in development and clean energy. Although this site has a Southern African focus, particular international activities that are of relevance have been included.

The portal not only allows users to access information on PURE projects and studies from around the globe, but it also allows users to actively engage with each other on PURE-related topics through the creation of an online community. Please feel free to explore the rest of the portal using the navigation menu below.

If you have any articles/events that  might be of relevance, please submit them to Wikus Kruger.

You are also more than welcome to contact him concerning any queries you might have.

Monitoring the Eastern Cape off-grid concession utility

Date: 2010 – 2014
Client: Department of Energy/KfW
Location: South Africa (Eastern Cape)

Outcome: Restio Energy has been subcontracted by EDG (Energy & Development Group) to monitor the operations of an off-grid concession utility in rural Eastern Cape province, South Africa. The monitoring is mainly done by field workers through frequent technical and social surveys of new installations and “older” customers. Other monitoring activities include laboratory testing of equipment, remote monitoring of sample systems (mainly performed by EDG), focus groups and quarterly stakeholder meetings. The main purpose of the monitoring consultant is to check and approve the quality of installations and maintenance as well as adherence to technical & customer service standards, consequently also approving invoices submitted by the off-grid service provider to the client.

Reducing the Carbon Footpring of Tanzanian Agro-processing

This UNIDO project, completed in partnership with Integrated Energy Solutions, started in early 2010 and looked at reducing the carbon footrpint of Tanzania’s agro-processing sector. Through interviews, site visits and desktop reviews, we were able to calculate the carbon footprint of some of Tanzania’s most prominent agro-processing industries, analysing the energy use involved with each. We were then able to determine the most appropriate measures needed to reduce these impacts, including the introduction of renewable energy sources, energy efficiency measures and operational interventions. The project also involved training industry representatives on these opportunities and how to take advantage of the opportunities presented, including in particular carbon funding.

2011

With 2011 already a month old, we thought it wise to post a quick update on our plans for the year. At the moment, Restio Energy consulting is busy with 2 projects in Africa:

1. Monitoring the off-grid Solar Home System concession utility in the Eastern Cape (we form part of the monitoring team headed up by BURGEAP and the Energy & Development Group). Client: KfW and the South African Department of Energy.

2. Creating a market for solar PV in the Kigoma region (Eastern Tanzania). Client: Millennium Challenge Account.

There are a number of very exciting consulting opportunities in the pipeline, so watch this space.

StoveTec Stoves, Barefoot Solar Lighting products and Wonderbag efficient cookers are all available from a number of retailers, including AgriMark (KaapAgri).
